Water-Based Paper & Packaging Adhesives

Paper converting and packaging lines run largely on water-based adhesives — synthetic dispersions, starch and dextrin, and casein for some labelling. The right one depends on the paper surface, the machine and its speed, and what the pack goes through afterwards, so each application below starts from those.

An application we assess on request. Share your substrates, process and target requirements and we will confirm suitability, available documentation and sourcing feasibility — no stock grade is listed yet.

Choose Your Application

Folding Cartons

Side seams are glued on folder-gluers by nozzle or glue wheel at high speed. The difficulty is the board surface: varnished, UV-coated, laminated and metallised areas resist water-based adhesives, so seams either get glue-free zones in the print or an adhesive formulated for those surfaces.

Specify: Board and print finish at the seam, machine and application method, speed.

Paper Bags

A paper bag has three different joints: the side seam, the bottom and the handle. Bottoms and handles carry the load, and grease-resistant or coated papers change how the adhesive wets.

Specify: Paper grade and coatings, which joint, the load the bag carries.

Paper Tubes and Honeycomb

Spiral and convolute tube winding needs fast grab and high solids so plies do not slip, and tube strength depends on even coverage and complete drying. Honeycomb core production adds the demand that bonds survive expansion of the block.

Specify: Winding method, paper plies, required crush strength, drying capacity.

Bookbinding and Rigid Boxes

Water-based adhesives handle case-making, lining, endpapers and rigid box wrapping. Perfect-bound spines are more often hot-melt EVA or PUR. Coated papers and lay-flat requirements decide the formulation.

Specify: Operation, paper and board, lay-flat requirement.

Remoistenable Adhesives

Envelope flaps and gummed paper tape carry a dry adhesive film that is reactivated with water. The film must not stick to itself in storage, yet must grab quickly once wetted.

Specify: Product, storage conditions, how it is moistened.

Wet-Glue Labelling

Bottling lines apply paper labels with glue applied at the machine. Casein-based adhesives are used on cold, wet glass and on returnable bottles whose labels must wash off; synthetic adhesives suit many plastic containers. This is a different product from pressure-sensitive label stock.

Specify: Container material, condition at labelling (cold, wet), label paper, wash-off requirement, line speed.

Starch and Dextrin Adhesives

Starch adhesives bond corrugated board, usually prepared on site from powder, and starch and dextrin adhesives are used in tube winding, bag making and labelling. Buying powder to cook on site and buying ready-to-use adhesive are different purchases.

Specify: Powder or ready-to-use, application, water resistance needed.

Cold Seal

Cold seal is pattern-coated onto flexible packaging film and seals to itself under pressure without heat, which protects heat-sensitive contents such as chocolate. The opposite face needs a release coating so the reel unwinds. It is a specialised coating application.

Specify: Film structure, coating method, release lacquer, contents.

VAE and PVAc for Difficult Surfaces

Vinyl acetate–ethylene and polyvinyl acetate adhesives are the general-purpose dispersions of paper converting, with VAE holding better on film-laminated and coated surfaces.

Specify: The two surfaces being joined and the machine.

Food Contact

An adhesive in food packaging is assessed as part of the pack. In the US, FDA 21 CFR 175.105 covers adhesives in food packaging; in the EU, Regulation 1935/2004 and good manufacturing practice apply, and compliance is usually shown by migration testing of the finished structure. Whether the adhesive is separated from the food by a barrier, the contents, the temperature and the contact time all matter — which is why "food-safe adhesive" on its own is not a claim we make.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why won’t water-based glue hold on my varnished carton?
Varnishes, UV coatings and laminates stop water-based adhesive wetting and penetrating the board. The usual fixes are leaving glue-free areas in the print at the seam, or using an adhesive formulated for coated surfaces. Tell us the exact finish at the seam.
Hot melt or water-based for carton and case sealing?
Hot melt sets almost instantly and dominates fast automated case sealing. Water-based adhesive costs less per bond, needs no heating, and suits slower lines and many folder-gluer seams, but needs time to set. Line speed and the board surface usually decide.
Casein or synthetic label glue?
Casein adhesives are traditional for cold, wet glass bottles and returnable bottles because they grab in those conditions and wash off in the bottle washer. Synthetic adhesives are common for plastic containers and non-returnable lines. The container and its condition at the labeller decide.
Is your packaging adhesive food safe?
Food-contact suitability is assessed for the finished pack — its structure, contents, temperature and time — against rules such as FDA 21 CFR 175.105 for adhesives in the US and EU Regulation 1935/2004 with migration testing. We do not make a blanket "food safe" claim for an adhesive type; send the pack structure and use.
Can the adhesive be repulpable or recyclable?
Repulpable and wash-off adhesives exist, but the claim is proven for a specific pack structure, coat weight and recycling process. Tell us which claim you need to make and on what pack.
