Neutral Silicone Sealant

Neutral cure (oxime/alkoxy) silicone sealant suitable for a wide range of construction and industrial applications. Releases no acetic acid, so it does not corrode metals the way acetoxy does; mirror, stone and structural joints need a grade confirmed for that use.

Neutral cure silicone sealant derives its name from its curing chemistry: unlike acetoxy silicone that releases acetic acid during cross-linking, neutral silicone uses oxime or alkoxy cure mechanisms that produce non-corrosive byproducts. This distinction is not merely academic — it determines substrate compatibility. Acetoxy cure silicone corrodes copper, brass, and zinc surfaces, attacks the silver backing on mirrors (causing black-edge deterioration), and reacts adversely with alkaline substrates such as concrete and marble. Neutral cure removes the acid attack, which is why it is the default choice for professional construction and industrial sealing applications. It describes the curing chemistry, not a guarantee for every substrate: mirror backings, natural stone and structural applications require a grade and test evidence suitable for that specific use.

The two primary neutral cure chemistries — oxime and alkoxy — each have specific performance characteristics. Oxime cure (also called ketoximino) sealants are the most common, offering good adhesion to most construction materials, moderate cure speed, and broad compatibility. Alkoxy cure sealants produce alcohol (typically methanol) as a byproduct and provide superior adhesion to porous substrates like concrete and masonry. Our manufacturing line produces both oxime and alkoxy formulations, allowing buyers to select the optimal chemistry for their project requirements. Both types deliver service temperature performance from -40 to +150 degrees Celsius and UV stability exceeding 20 years in exterior weathering exposure.

From a performance standpoint, our neutral silicone sealant achieves Shore A hardness of 18-25 (indicating a flexible, rubber-like cure), tensile strength above 0.8 MPa, and elongation at break exceeding 400 percent. The high elongation is critical for construction joint sealing, where thermal expansion and contraction, building settlement, and wind load deflection create constant movement in sealed joints. With a rated movement capability of plus or minus 25 percent, the sealant accommodates joint width changes without adhesive failure or cohesive tearing — meeting the requirements of ASTM C920, EN 15651, and GB/T 14683 standards.

Indicative values for the series. Figures move with the grade, the substrate pair, coat weight and cure conditions, so treat them as a basis for comparison rather than a specification — the technical data sheet for the grade you are supplied states the values that apply to it, and the conditions they were measured under.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why choose neutral silicone sealant over acetoxy?
Neutral silicone sealant does not release acetic acid while it cures, so it does not corrode metals, etch marble or react with alkaline concrete the way acetoxy does. Two limits still apply. Porous natural stone can stain from plasticiser migrating out of a general-purpose sealant, so stone joints need a grade tested as non-staining on that stone. And mirror backings vary, so a mirror joint needs a sealant confirmed compatible with that coating. While acetoxy cures faster, neutral is compatible with far more substrates.
How long does neutral silicone sealant take to cure?
Skin formation occurs in 10-20 minutes. Full depth cure proceeds at approximately 2-3 mm per 24 hours at 23°C and 50% relative humidity. A standard 10mm joint takes 3-5 days for full cure. Cure speed increases with higher temperature and humidity.
Is your neutral silicone sealant suitable for structural glazing?
No. This is a weatherproofing sealant for non-structural joints. Structural glazing, where the sealant carries wind load on the glass, uses sealants tested and approved for that purpose — for example to ASTM C1184 or ETAG 002 — usually two-component and approved project by project with adhesion testing on the actual frame and glass. We do not list a structural grade in this catalogue; send the project specification and we will tell you plainly whether we can supply against it.
Can neutral silicone sealant be painted?
Standard silicone sealant cannot be painted over, as most paints will not adhere to the cured silicone surface. Where the joint must be painted, the usual answer is a paintable MS polymer or polyurethane sealant rather than silicone; otherwise apply the silicone after painting and mask the joint edges.
What colors are available for neutral silicone sealant?
We stock white, clear/transparent, black, grey, and brown as standard colors. Custom RAL color matching is available with a minimum order of 3,000 cartridges. We provide color samples for customer approval before bulk production begins.
